The Scottish Junior National Blackbelt Team were crowned World Sparring Champions at the recent 7th GTF World Championships which were held in Malaysia. After getting through to the semi finals Scotland came up against the Malaysian ‘B’ Team’.

SEMI FINAL

Scottish stand-in coach Mrs Shirley Cunningham put up Team Captain, Allan Cunningham first, this was a great move, and in an excellent fight ,in which Allan did nothing wrong, Scotland went 0 v 1 up on the Malaysian ‘B’ Team.

Next into the ring went Ryan McLaughlin, he looked an fought nervously and fought nowhere even close to his usual standards, it was now Malaysia ‘B’ 1 v 1 Scotland.

Every thing now depended on Callum Hardy, without a doubt this was the fight of Callum’s life, absoloutley excellent, he scored 5 head  kicks, game over.   Malaysia ‘B’ 1 v 2 Scotland. We were now in to the final against the much fancied Malaysian ‘A’ Team.

FINAL

Mrs Cunningham decided not to change the order of the fighters in the winning line up, and put Team Captain, Allan up first again, this fight was a much closer one but the result turns out the same. Malaysia ‘A’ 0 v 1 Scotland.

Ryan was second up, his second fight was like night and day from his first bout. Ryans nerves were gone. An important win. WORLD CHAMPIONS. Malaysia ‘A’ 0 v 2 Scotland

Callum was last up again and his fight was also like night and day, but for the wrong reasons. But as it turned out his fight was irrelevent as Scotland had aready won the Gold. Malaysia ‘A’ 1 v 2 Scotland

The Team Patterns were scored by the point system, and the Team had trained hard prior to the Championships under the watchful eyes of National Team Coach Miss Laura Cunningham, who used her previous Scottish National Team experience to guide the Team within a point of becoming World Champions. The team won Silver even although this is only their first year together. The teams choice was PO-EUN HYUNG and the mandatory Team Pattern was KWANG-GAE HYUNG

GOLD & SILVER IN THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS…… EXCELLENT JOB TEAM.
